How Germany got stuck paying for Russia's war. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has sanctioned much of Russia’s economy, but Russia’s natural gas trade remains untouched. The EU gets nearly a quarter of its energy from natural gas, and almost half of that comes from Russia, the world’s largest gas exporter. As the EU’s largest economy, Germany is Russia’s biggest customer, paying Russia’s state-owned gas company 200 million euros. So while Germany has even sent Ukraine weapons, in a historic shift of military policy, through its gas supply Germany is helping to pay for the war it’s trying to stop. It’s inherently hard to pivot away from piped gas. Unlike oil and coal, which can be rerouted, gas pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and physically connect producer and buyer directly, making them long-term commitments. That was the origin of Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and over time it’s only deepened. Today, as the world tries to punish Russia through sanctions, that dependence is getting in the way. Europe has felt forced to act, sanctioning Russian energy supplies over its war in Ukraine. This week, the EU piled on the pressure, capping the price of gas. A controversial move, that will distort the market and could affect security of supply. Meanwhile, EU nations are making tough choices to try to ease the costs, which are impacting inflation and pushing up prices for households and businesses. Germany is opening a new liquefied natural gas terminal. A key supplier of this gas? Qatar, a country Germany has criticized over human rights abuses. Russia provides roughly a quarter of the natural gas consumed in the European Union, more in some countries like Germany. The vast bulk of those exports to the EU, some 80-percent, flows through a network of pipelines on Ukrainian soil. The government in Kiew earns transit-fees from Russia and is still, in fact, despite the war. The toll of the conflict vastly outweighs those revenues, however and that's why Ukraine has been impatient for the EU to end gas-imports from Russia. Europe is already desperately searching for natural-gas to replace Russian imports. On paper at least, the continent's largest gas-field beneath the Dutch city of Groningen would seem to be an option. But years of drilling there have had a devastating side-effect: Earthquakes, triggered by changes in pressure. Missile attacks on Ukraine's battered power grid are an "obvious crime against humanity," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told the UN Security Council. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday to take action to stop Russian airstrikes targeting vital infrastructure that have once again plunged Ukrainian cities into darkness and cold as winter sets in. "Today is just one day, but we have received 70 missiles. That's the Russian formula of terror," Zelenskyy said via video link to the Council chamber in New York. He said hospitals, schools, transport infrastructure and residential areas had all been hit. "When we have the temperature below zero, and millions of people without energy supplies, without heating, without water, this is an obvious crime against humanity," he told the meeting in New York. In his speech, Zelenskyy called for the adoption of a UN resolution condemning energy terror. Ukraine is waiting to see "a very firm reaction" to Wednesday's airstrikes from the world, he added. The Council is unlikely to take any action in response to the appeal since Russia is a member with veto power. However, Zelenskyy called for Russia to be denied a vote on any decision concerning its actions. "We cannot be hostage to one international terrorist," he said. "Russia is doing everything to make an energy generator a more powerful tool than the UN Charter." Russia's UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya responded by complaining that it was against Council rules for Zelenskyy to appear via video and rejected what he called "reckless threats and ultimatums" by Ukraine and its supporters in the West. One consequence of the war in Ukraine is that Europe is now scrambling to reduce its dependence on Russian energy. The price of gas was already high before the invasion. Now that Russian soldiers are in Ukraine prices have spiked again. Natural gas now costs 10 times more than at the start of 2021. Gas is still flowing through pipelines from Russia to customers in western Europe. But if the Kremlin were to cut supplies, that would cause a shockwave across the continent. One natural gas pipeline which has never gone online and probably never will is the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany. For decades, Europe depended on Russia to supply it with low-cost oil and natural gas to keep its industries buzzing. But now, Europe’s industrial energy costs are soaring in the wake of the Ukrainian crisis. Natural-gas prices are now three times higher than they were a year ago, and factories are scrambling to find alternatives to Russian energy, unsuccessfully so. No replacement for Russian energy. The European Union claims to be punishing Russia, in line with which it has stopped consumption of Russian fuels. That’s what the world is being told. But that’s not the case. Europe continues to import a prime Russian fuel. Surprisingly, nobody seems to be talking about this continuing trade between Europe and Russia, and the EU is maintaining stoic silence on the issue. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is looking to Senegal to help European countries cut their dependence on Russian energy. During a joint news conference with Senegalese President Macky Sall, Scholz expressed interest in a gas exploitation project that could bring the first barrels by next year. Scholz said Germany wants to help Senegal to develop a gas field off the coast of West Africa. According to media reports, BP, the operator of the field, estimates it holds 425 million cubic meters of natural gas. "We have started exchanging ideas about this, and following these talks we will continue to do so very intensively at the technical level," said the chancellor. Sall said Senegal was "interested in supplying gas to the European market." Germany also wants to collaborate more with Senegal on solar and wind energy projects, the chancellor said, as well as liquified natural gas (LNG). Scholz is heading to Niger and South Africa next, which has pledged to phase out its use of coal. Germany is also looking for natural gas off its own coast - including inside the Wadden Sea, which is known for its rich biodiversity – despite criticism by some local residents. #Scholz #Senegal #NaturalGas Subscribe: 🤍 For more news go to: 🤍 Follow DW on social media: ►Facebook: 🤍 ►Twitter: 🤍 ►Instagram: 🤍 Für Videos in deutscher Sprache besuchen Sie: 🤍
